A video about my son--Autism

My long time readers know that Little Bean, my 5 year old, was diagnosed with Autism this past November. As his mom, I know him so well, and I can definitely see that the diagnosis fits him. But this has not been the case with many of our friends and family. Many are under-educated about Autism, or refuse to educate themselves about it. Many feel that admitting that he is Autistic is a bad thing, or somehow takes away from all the great things that he is. Some just want to ignore it. And of those relatives who we live near now that we are in Oklahoma, many of them don't even know about his diagnosis, but they definitely know something isn't "normal" because they are making comments and asking questions about his "quirkiness". So, I made this video. I plan to put it on CD and just send it to those who need to know more, as a way to help them understand Little Bean a bit better, and as a way to quickly educate them about what Autism entails for Little Bean. And by the way, Little Bean has Juvenile Xanthogranuloma as well, but that is the subject for another post, and has nothing to do with Autism.

I am linking to this post over at Confessions of a Non-Domestic Housewife. You can find more posts about Autism on her blog througout the rest of March and April (April is Autism Awareness Month).

I think this beautiful video will help anyone who is willing to accept the truth to better understand. It's wonderful that you're doing this for your son and your family. :)

That was beautiful! I got all choked up watching it! We've long suspected our son is on the autism spectrum (Asperger's) but he's never had a diagnosis. Either way, he is still our beautiful, loving boy and "the way he is" only makes him more precious to us!

What a special video. My granddaughter was diagnosed shortly after you found out about Little Bean. This will help many people to understand them. It is amazing how many things she does just like your little guy, especially the orderly lining up of things. But just like Little Bean, my little Ellie is the same sweet little girl she was before, and like you said now we just understand her better. Thank you for posting this.

What a fantastic video!! I loved how you addressed the different ways the Autism affects your son and how those around him can be aware of that. I think it would be a wonderful help to those who want to know more about him and how to be a part of his life. Great job!!

I LOVE this video...it is really brilliantly done. I think it will be wonderful in helping others understand what autism means for Elijah...I love how you did the "tips" so people know what to DO with the information. You are so insightful to think to do this and to do it so...perfectly.

We are missing you guys!! I really want to hear how everything is over there but I know you are super busy settling in still. Email me when you have a moment, OK?! Big hugs!

I really loved this video. I've wondered before if my oldest son (almost 18) was on the verge of being on the spectrum. I could relate to much of the video.

One question (I hope you don't mind). What are the marks under his eyes that I saw in so many pictures? Is this from the Autism? Hope that isn't too personal.

P31--Thanks for commenting on my video about my son's Autism. My son also has a benign white blood cell disease called Juvenile Xanthogranuloma. So that is what the orange lesions on his face are. :) I don't mind you asking, many people are curious about them because JXG is so rare. You can google it or look through my blog for more about it, but it doesn't have anything to do with Autism. :)
